Where to have coffee in New York

For me, one of the most important parts of exploring a new place is knowing where to stop for a great coffee on the way. I spend a lot of time researching and finding some of the most popular coffee shops in the area but also some smaller, up and coming, local favourites. I've decided to start sharing my experiences and hopefully help save you some time in finding your next caffeine fix!

So, if coffee is your thing, these are just a few of our favourite coffee shops that you can find in New York City.

#1 Devoción

Devoción is an awesome coffee shop. Their coffee roaster sits right inside the front door behind big glass windows, letting you witness just how fresh the coffee is, before you even reach the counter. It’s a bustling spot full of people working (though I didn’t see any outlets to charge anything!). We had to wait a little for a seat but it was well worth it for the delicious, fresh coffee on offer. By fresh they mean it may have been picked right from the coffee plant in Colombia as close as a week ago. Amazing. Cool staff that seemed to love the shop as much as the customers. Be sure to ask about the new coffees on offer and maybe pick up a bag to take away with you!

#2 Blue Bottle

If you like great coffee you’ve most probably heard of Blue Bottle. Founded in 1999 in a shed in San Francisco it is now one of the fastest growing coffee shops in the world. It’s easy to see why. The space is beautifully minimal, with all the attention given to the coffee. We were living the dream with this Blue Bottle Cafe being just a few steps away from our apartment. We got our usual flat white which was as great as ever. We also gave their cold brew concentrate a go, which drips for 12 hours through this awesome looking contraption below! Designed to be drunk like whisky over a large cube of ice. If you find it too strong just dilute with 3 part water to 1 part concentrate.

#3 Stumptown Coffee Roasters

Another of America’s biggest coffee shops. We loved the interior of Stumptown coffee on 30 West 8th with a rustic and antique vibe. Whenever we go to Stumptown there never seems to be any seats (which I guess is a good thing!) so we drop in, get a takeaway flat white, and a couple of their Chocolate Cold Brew Coffees. I would travel back to New York just to drink another one of those cold brews. I just wish they sold them in a full sized milk carton!

#4 Happy Bones

A cool little space at 394 Broome Street. They describe themselves pretty nicely on their website, “New York City is about energy and creativity, and Happy Bones exists to inspire and energize New Yorkers. We start with the best coffee and the best baristas in the city, add amazing local art, and bring you the most interesting publications from the world over.”

Grab a coffee, a stool, and a magazine, and you’re sorted for the morning. A new favourite plan of ours in NYC. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area.
